Emil Pakarklis

My name is Emil Pakarklis and I’m an iPhoneographer, blogger and Apple addict from Latvia.

I was never an artist or a photographer. My favorite subjects in school where math and physics, and I was known to be a science nerd who only sees the world in facts and figures.

But I was a technology geek, so I saved up some money and bought iPhone 4S about two and a half years ago. And that changed my life forever.

I never really had a medium that I could use to express myself. I didn’t know how to paint or write poetry, so I just assumed that I was not a creative person. But with the iPhone I could capture, edit and share great photography easier than ever before.

And I was hooked!

In just a few short months I turned from the least artistic person I knew into someone who tries to capture beauty at all times. It didn’t always work, but I was learning new things every day.

I started sharing my photography, people started following me on Instagram, and soon I realized that I would be a photographer for life. In fact, I was so excited that I wanted to help other people improve their iPhone photos as well. That’s how iPhone Photography School was born.

Today I have created one of the largest online resources about iPhone photography which helps thousands of readers take and edit better photos with the iPhone.

Long exposures of the night sky

Next time you’re in the countryside at night do yourself a favour: look up. If it’s clear and conditions are right you’ll see a seemingly infinite number of stars twinkling like diamonds on a sheet of black velvet. As a visual pleasure it’s hard to […]

Dealing with Contrast

Contrast is usually at its highest when a scene is backlit. In this image there wasn’t much that could be done to lighten the shadows. I exposed so that the highlights weren’t too badly burnt out and didn’t worry too much about the shadows. Contrast […]

Black and White Portraits : Weekend Assignment

Colour can be distracting. Stripped of colour an image is entirely about the subject (unless of course the entire point of the subject is its colour…). This is particularly true of portraiture. Black and white arguably conveys the inner soul of the subject more powerfully […]
